Existing broadband feeds can be augmented with additional bandwidth, or alternative methods such a bi-directional satellite feed can be used as hot swap disaster recovery mechanisms. While the availability is 24/7 and the contention is well below that of a basic ADSL connection the inherent latency of a satellite system can cause problems for VoIP connectivity or real-time interactive applications. However the satellite system does not rely on local fibre or leased line availability.
